FOUNDER’S STORY
In August 2015, while we were on a family camping trip in Yosemite, a massive tree branch fell on the tent in which our beloved son, Dragon Kim, and his dear friend, Justin Lee, were sleeping. Dragon and Justin were instantly killed.
They say grief is love with nowhere to go. Our love for Dragon needed somewhere to land. We established The Dragon Kim Foundation in Dragon’s honor to carry on his love of life, to make it possible for other young people to pursue their passions, and to help give others access to a bright future.
The Dragon Kim Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire and activate teen leaders to use their passions to help their communities. All our programs strive to engage young leaders and empower them to change their world and lead amazing lives.
Our Fellowship Program is a seven month social entrepreneurship incubator that provides teen leaders with leadership training, a mentor, and a grant of up to $5,000 to launch a service project that will help underserved communities. Our annual class of teen Dragons is intentionally diverse in many ways: ethnically, gender diverse, socioeconomically, and geographically (throughout California and Nevada). The teens we train get to grow alongside people from all different backgrounds. We also enable adults and community organizations to make a difference in the lives of teens as mentors and partners. Together, our projects have resulted in over 40,000 community service hours helping 4,000 people.
